The Bronkhorst Family

“Your baby has markers for down syndrome”. Wait, what?! My heart skipped a beat. It can’t be, I have so many dreams for this little nugget. I was shocked, but I instantly knew that we would love and protect her like her big sisters no matter what.

Her birth was magical and she was loved and perfect. A few hours later, came a second shock. We need to fly you and baby to Windhoek as soon as possible because her saturation levels keep dropping. She spent 3 weeks in Lady Pohamba NICU with congenital heart disease and severe pulmonary hypertension. It was quite overwhelming to see my tiny baby with all the tubes and monitors.  Our baby girl kept fighting to get better and with loads of prayers from all over her levels stabilized and we were able to take her home. What joy for her sissies and grandpa to meet her back home. 6 weeks later we took her for a heart echo and scans and she did so well. No need for any surgery and we could stop all medication!

Wow, she has truly been such a blessing in our lives and we can’t imagine life without her. She is such a happy little camper. Always smiling and in a good mood. Do I worry about what the future holds for her? Yes, I do, but we decided we are going to raise her like her big sissies. Same rules and discipline. And with just as much love.

Yes, there may be some obstacles in the future. We live on a farm in Namibia, far from doctors, physio and teachers, but we take it day by day and we look forward to helping her become the best possible version of herself.
